Google Search Console, formerly known as Google Webmaster Tools, is a free software tool provided by Google that allows publishers to better analyze a site's search performance. The dashboard provides search analytics, crawl errors, and tools to manage search appearance.

Tempest supports configuration for Google Search Console via the HTML meta tag. Below you'll find instructions on how to access and provide the right tag to your Site Producer during the migration process.

Publishers new to Google Search Console

Step 1: Sign into Google

Log into your Google account through Gmail, Google+, or anywhere you have a Google Account.

If you don't have a Google account, you must set one up by visiting google.com and clicking "Sign In." Then choose "Create an account" and complete the form.

Step 2: Set up Google Search Console

While signed into your Google account, navigate to the Google Search Console. Create two properties: one for the bare domain URL (eg. http://example.com) and one for the www domain URL (eg. http://www.example.com).

Note: If you already have at least one property set up, you will see that display. To add another website or app, just click the Add a Property button and then enter the new site’s URL.

Step 3: Prepare for Tempest

In preparation for launch, your site producer will configure the HTML meta tag on your website. To provide the HTML meta tag, click on "Alternative Methods."

Select the HTML tag and copy/paste the meta tag into your Tempest Materials sheet or provide in an email to your Site Producer.

Remember that the meta tag cannot be validated until the site is live. Prior to launch, click on "Not Now" after the meta tag has been generated and provided to your Site Producer.

Step 4: Verify

Google needs to confirm that this website or app belongs to you in order to verify. Once the meta tag is appropriately applied to the site AND the site is live to the public, you can verify.

To verify that you are the site owner, find one of the properties you've created (either the bare or the www. domain) from the Google Search Console dashboard.

Under Manage Property on the right, toggle to "Verify this property"
