Tempest provides five different options for photo galleries. Whichever you choose to use is dependent on the content, subject matter or your site's aesthetic preferences. This article will explore each type of photo gallery. If you are already aware of what these galleries are and would like to see examples of them implemented, learn how they can be used effectively to create interlinking strategies, or if you would like to learn more about how galleries connect to increasing revenue and growing your pageviews, please scroll to the bottom or click the following link to visit the Additional Resources/Study Guide.

Photo Gallery Best Practices

  • Have a keyword rich gallery title.
  • Have a keyword rich gallery caption.
  • Use rich terms/tags that would draw people over to more inline gallery content.
  • Have titles and captions for each photo.
  • Make sure all photos have alt text.
  • Use strong anchor text to hyperlink to related content.
  • Click the pencil in the bottom righthand corner of the photos to turn them into hyperlinks to more photo gallery content.
  • Inline gallery photo captions have the same formatting options as the composer. That means you can use bulleted and numbered lists and sub headers within your captions. This increases engagement for each photo and is an intelligent way to use keywords.
Reach out to publisher support (pubsupport@thearenagroup.net) and ask to have your inline galleries set to have an ad after every photo. This maximizes ad space on your page.

Analytics for Galleries

Content Gallery data and Photo Gallery data will be reported to your Google Analytics in the same way; each slide receives its own pageview.

In addition, publishers can now segment out their traffic to gauge performance by Page Type. This is done by using a Custom Dimension and setting up a Custom Report in Google Analytics.

For more information see Performance by Page Types in Google Analytics.

Photo Gallery

The Photo Gallery displays inline in the body of the content. Once the user opens the gallery, they see the full-sized image in view and can pan through the images of the gallery using arrows and/or swiping on touch devices. The Photo Gallery format works perfectly across desktop, tablet, and mobile.

Advertising for Gallery

Below is a quick summary of advertising placements in galleries.

  • Desktop - 728x90 top, 300x600 right sidebar, and 300x250 interstitials.
  • Tablet - 728x90 top and 300x250 interstitials.
  • Mobile - 320x50 and 300x250 interstitials.

Content Gallery

Beautiful imagery and great content are key to engaging audiences. Content Galleries will allow both images and long form content to be showcased in slideshow format. It is compatible across all devices and  gracefully translated on AMP and Instant Articles. Content Galleries provide yet another option for great storytelling, and more variety for your readers.

The Content Gallery takes up the full column width of a post. Readers can easily engage and navigate through the Content Gallery without ever leaving the full post. This Content Gallery format works perfectly across desktop, tablet and mobile.

Advertising for Gallery

Below is a quick summary of advertising placements in galleries.

  • Desktop - 300x600 unit adjacent and 300x250 interstitials.
  • Tablet - 728x90 under the gallery image and 300x250 interstitials.
  • Mobile -  320x50 under the gallery image and 300x250 interstitials.

Configure Number of Images Between Each Ad

We allow sites to configure the frequency of ads to be displayed in the gallery content. You could set an ad to appear between every 1 image or every 2. The site configuration will control this feature of the Inline gallery.

Reach out to publisher support (pubsupport@thearenagroup.net) and ask to have your inline galleries set to have an ad after every photo. This maximizes ad space on your page.

Inline Gallery

Tempest has long been able to create galleries with photos. However, we weren’t always able to monetize those galleries to the maximum. This article explains how to create an inline gallery, which will load all images in the content well of a page so that the user can simply scroll the entire page without having to click next to see another photo. This experience also gives us a way to control the frequency of ads between each image. We expect that this experience will be greatest on sites that have a lot of great images.

Diptych

A diptych image is generally two images combined into a single frame or presented together. Triptych is three images aligned in the same manner. This feature was requested by Sports Illustrated and was something their photo/edit team had the ability to use in a past CMS.

Cropping and Image Sizes

The diptych/triptych galleries are not using a fixed height - the height is defined by the aspect ratio of the tallest image selected for the gallery. In other words, the image with the tallest height will not be cropped and the other images will use the same proportions as the tallest.

Using portrait-oriented images (taller than wide) is a best practice for diptych/triptych galleries. Using multiple landscape images will result in the image-set being significantly shorter than portrait images.

For facial recognition, these image galleries are using the same Cloudinary “face focus” we use for all images on Tempest.

Video Photo Gallery

There's another way to raise revenue using photo galleries and that's to make a video gallery using the photos. As mentioned, the ads on videos are more valuable. You can do this quickly using Wibbitz, iMovie, or Wochit.
